About South Caicos
Stretching 8.5 square miles, South Caicos known as the “Big South” is known for its fishing, avian life and diving. Its fishing industry produces majority of fish, lobster and conch packaged for domestic and international sales.
Home to Boston University’s School for Field Studies for marine biologists and underwater ecologists, the sleepy little harbor town of Cockburn Harbour was once the most active commercial community in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Historical features include 18th century Commissioner’s House where Queen Elizabeth stayed, the old salt works and the Boiling Hole which fed the salt pans and once made South Caicos one of the biggest producers of salt.
With several examples of classical architecture, narrow streets and quaint stone walls, it is the coral walls which attract scuba divers to South Caicos, offering some of the best wall diving and encounters with large marine creatures including sharks, eagle rays and loggerhead turtles. South Caicos joins Grand Turk and Salt Cay as one of the best locations for whale-watching for January through April.
With unspoiled marine ecosystems South Caicos is primed for aquaculture investments, and additionally hotel and residential developments, with a vibrant community and spectacular environment. With so many opportunities on land and underwater, South Caicos is ready to attract the big fish.
